Ancient literary text

Genesis 2:10

Genesis. The Eden file does not name a Hebrew edition. The Latin checked here is the public-domain Vulgate.

The patriarchal narrative. No year is in the verse.

Citation
Genesis 2:10 in the same CCEL Vulgate file. Verses 11–14 of that file name Phison, Geon, Tigris, and Eufrates. Ellis quotes the verse. He does not say he used this file.

What the source says

The Latin says a river went out from the place of pleasure to water paradise, and from there was divided into four heads.

Why it is here

It is the verse Eden in Egypt starts from.

Ralph’s interpretation

The river is read as the Nile, and the Hebrew names in the chapter are not taken as automatically the Tigris and the Euphrates.

Alternative readings

The usual reading places Eden in Mesopotamia and reads the four rivers from there. That reading is not a line in his file.
